So exciting to see the final print suite for the wedding invitations featuring my watercolor of The Old Barn Inn in St. Albans, Missouri! The Old Barn Inn painting is both an heirloom wedding memory and also custom wedding invitation art for the couple.

Working from Photos
The bride sent me a number of photos of the wedding venue. From the photos I was able to piece together the most iconic elements of the venue into one frame. I saw that the gateposts were an important element in the character of the wedding venue, but I had to move the gateposts closer to the building in order to fit everything into the rectangle.
Over the last several years of creating these heirloom paintings for families and couples, I have grown in my ability shift elements to create a seamless, pleasing composition.
Do I need to be on site to create a painting? No! Although it’s helpful to be able to visit and sketch and take lots of photographs, most of the time I work from photographs sent to me by my client. Sometimes I will ask questions about what elements are important. For example, with this Ohio house watercolor there were plantings hiding the front door, so I communicated with the client about which ones to “move” so that the painting could visually welcome visitors to the front door.
Sharing the Wedding Venue Painting
Sometimes I create wedding venue paintings to celebrate an anniversary, but in this case the bride wanted the painting to be printed on the invitations. It’s wonderful to see what designers like Amy at Alice Louise Press do with my artwork so that each wedding guest receives art in their invitation!
